The Radcliffe is a popular and enduring list, because the novels we loved as students tend to be the ones that shaped our vision of what the novel should be. Nevertheless, this list bears the marks of one created by committee. It has many multiple entries by an author reflecting each judge's wish to include their own favourite work by writers popular at the time. It also betrays the judges susceptibilities to successful movie adaptations and college course reading lists.
